Edit by Script

Updated yesterday

Edit by Script lets you cut, trim, or clean up a video simply by editing its transcript. Delete words and the matching footage disappears; restore text and the footage returns. Here is an article showing you all you need to know.

Who Can Use This Feature?

  • Available For: Available for all plans.

Limitations

  • The uploaded video must contain spoken audio.

  • Subtitles must be generated with our Auto‑subtitle (manual or uploaded subtitle files are not supported).

  • Works with only languages that separate words with spaces; wider language support is in development.

  • Highlighting and dragging the text will not move the video to another section of the project, this is not supported.

Getting started with Edit by Script

  1. Add your video to the VEED editor.

  2. Click Edit by Text in the upper‑left corner of the timeline.

  3. If the project has no subtitles, select the language and click Auto‑transcribe.

  4. When transcription finishes, the transcript panel opens, and you can begin editing.

Cutting and Trimming

  • Highlight any words in the transcript and click Delete (or press Backspace).

  • The selected words turn into strikethrough text, and the corresponding video and audio segments are removed.

  • To undo a cut, highlight the strikethrough text and click Restore.

Removing Pauses

  • Natural pauses appear in the transcript as entries like (( 0.5 s )).
Delete or restore them the same way you edit words to tighten or loosen the pacing.

  • For faster cleanup, open the settings menu (button at the top right of the window) and choose Delete Silences. Pick a preset or drag the slider to remove pauses above a specific length in one click.

Removing Filler Words

  • If your transcript includes filler words such as “um,” “uh,” or “like,” open the settings menu and choose Filler Word Removal. The tool automatically deletes every detected filler word throughout the video. The option will be greyed out if there are no filler words to delete.

Exporting a Selected Section

  • You can also export only part of a video. Highlight the desired text in the transcript and click Export. We render a new clip containing just that portion.

Hiding Deleted Lines

  • By default, deleted words stay visible with a strikethrough so you can restore them.

  • If you prefer a cleaner view, open the settings menu and toggle Show Deleted off. All cut lines disappear from the panel (they can still be restored by switching the toggle on).

Helpful Shortcuts

  • Delete selected text: Backspace / Delete key

  • Undo / Redo: ⌘/Ctrl + Z and ⌘/Ctrl + Shift + Z (or Y)

  • Play / Pause: Spacebar

All changes update instantly in the preview, so you can review edits without re‑rendering.
