Updated yesterday

Adding subtitles is a great way to make your video content more accessible and engaging. Here is a tutorial on how to add subtitles to your file.

Who Can Use This Feature?

  • Available For: This feature is accessible by all plans with limitations shown on our pricing page.

How to use the auto subtitle tool

  1. Head over to veed.io and log in or create an account.

  2. From your dashboard, click Create Project.

  3. Upload your video or audio file by dragging it into the window or by clicking to select a file from your device.

  4. Once your file is uploaded, go to the Subtitles tab on the left menu.

  5. Choose the language spoken in your video and click Auto-subtitle to begin the transcription.

  6. Switch on the Detect Speakers option to detect multiple people speaking and to have separate subtitle styles for each speaker.

  7. You can also add automatic translation to translate the generated subtitles into another language. Switch on the Add Translation switch and select the language to which you want to translate. (Please note that limitations apply to the translation feature. Check our pricing page for more information.)

If your project contains multiple clips, you can:

  • Select a specific clip from the dropdown to transcribe only that clip.

  • Or choose Full project to transcribe all clips in the timeline that contain audio.

Editing and Styling your subtitles

Once the subtitles are generated, you will be redirected to the subtitle editor.

Under the Edit section, you can:

  • Edit each subtitle line by clicking and typing directly in the editor.

  • Highlight any text in the subtitles, and you can:

    • Set it Bold, Italic, or ̲𝖴̲𝗇̲𝖽̲𝖾̲𝗋̲𝗅̲𝗂̲𝗇̲𝖾̲ the text.

    • Change the color for the highlighted text.

    • Add the text to your dictionary to make subtitle generation more precise.

  • Some words will be highlighted in Orange. These words are Low confidence words where it wasn't sure if that's the correct word. Make sure you go through these words and correct them if needed.

  • Next to each subtitle box, there are 3 vertical dots you can click. Here you can:

    • Detach the selected subtitle, allowing you to move it to a different place on the canvas.

    • Delete the selected subtitle.

    • Show the timings for all subtitles, allowing you to change when they appear.

Under the Styles section, you can:

Select from a preset that you like, and this will apply to your subtitles. Clicking on Edit under the preset will allow you to:

  • Change the Font, Font Size, and Color of the text; set the text to Bold or Italic; Align the text to left, center, or right; change the Letter casing; and set the Spacing for the Line Height and Letter spacing.

  • Set the number of lines you want the subtitles to have.

  • Text outline: This allows you to set an outline for your subtiltes, the slider allows you to change the size of it, and you can set the color of the outline.

  • Text Shadow: This allows you to add a shadow to your subtitles. The slider allows you to set how far away the shadow appears from the text, you can select the color of the shadow, and clicking the 3 dots allows you to set the Distance, Blur, and Angle of the shadow.

  • Background: You can set a background for your subtitles from 4 preset backgrounds with this setting and change the color of the background.

  • Animation: Allows you to set an animation for your subtitles and set the background color of the animation.

  • Auto Highlight: Automatically highlights certain words in your subtitle to make it more engaging. You can set the highlighted text to be Bold or Italic, and change the color of the highlight.

  • Auto Emoji: Automatically adds Emojis to your subtitles based on the context of the subtitles. You can select the size and placement of the emojis, and clicking on the Emojie editor allows you to change and add emojis to each subtitle box.

  • Random Rotate Lines: This setting randomly rotates each subtitle in your project.

Note: Subtitle file download is available on Pro and Enterprise plans.

To subtitle additional clips:

  • Click the menu icon settings button next to the Styles button, and select + Subtitle another clip.

  • Follow the same steps to generate subtitles for the new clip.

Manual subtitles and file upload options

If you prefer not to use the auto subtitle tool, you can also:

  • Add subtitles manually by typing them in.

  • Upload an existing subtitle file (.SRT, .VTT, or .TXT).

To do this:

  1. Go to the Subtitles tab.

  2. Choose either Transcribe Manually or Upload Subtitle File.

  3. Follow the prompts to add your subtitles.

You can also choose to add subtitles at the project level (not linked to a specific video clip). This means subtitle timing will be applied to the full project timeline rather than to a single media file.
