VEED's Screen Recorder captures your screen, your camera, and your audio straight from your browser — no download needed. It also gives you a built-in teleprompter, so you can read your script while you record and land in the editor with your footage ready to work on. This article covers both ways to open the recorder, every setting available to you, and what to do if your camera or microphone isn't detected.
Who Can Use This Feature?
Available For: This feature is available for all plans.
Open the recorder
There are two ways in, and which one you use depends on whether you're starting something new or adding to a project you've already begun.
From your dashboard: to start a new project
Open More apps
In your dashboard, scroll to the bottom of the left panel and click More apps. The full list of VEED tools will appear.
Click Record
The recorder opens in a new page.
Select your layout and start
Choose how your screen and camera are arranged, then click Start Recording.
When you finish, your recording opens in the editor as a new project. See how VEED's dashboard works for a full tour of the left panel.
From the editor: to record into an existing project
Open your project
Find it under Recents on your dashboard, or in your Project Library.
Click Record in the top bar
The recorder opens with the same settings and layouts as above.
Your finished recording is added to the project you already had open, rather than creating a new one.
Note: the first time you record, your browser will ask permission to use your camera and microphone. You need to allow this to continue. If the prompt doesn't appear or you blocked it by mistake, see camera and microphone permissions below.
Everything below can be adjusted before you hit record.
Camera — click Cam to show or hide your camera. Click the arrow next to it to switch between camera feeds.
Microphone — click Mic to mute or unmute. Click the arrow next to it to switch input device.
Screen — toggle screen capture on or off. When it's on, you'll be asked to choose between your entire screen or a specific application window. You can record your screen only, your camera only, or both together.
Layout — choose how large your screen and camera appear and where they sit. You can also drag either one around the recorder page to reposition it, and resize it by dragging the circles at its corners once selected.
Aspect ratio — set this under Size before you start recording.
Background — pick a solid colour, choose one of the available images, or upload your own. Custom themes aren't currently supported.
Use the teleprompter
Click Prompter to open a scrolling script window on top of your recording view. Paste in the text you want to read, then adjust it to suit you:
Move it — click and drag the top-middle of the prompter window.
Change the speed — click the clock icon at the bottom left to set how fast the text scrolls.
Change how the text looks — click the settings button at the bottom right. From here you can set the margins of the text box, move the highlighter line that marks where the next line appears, resize the text with the smaller and larger A buttons, and make the window more or less transparent.
Recorder settings
Click the gear icon at the bottom right for a few extra options:
Countdown — turn the countdown before recording starts on or off.
Camera — mirror your webcam if you'd prefer.
Quality — choose the quality your video records at.
Record your video
Click Record
You'll find it at the top right.
Pause or retake as you go
Both buttons are at the top right while you're recording.
Click Stop when you're done
Your recording uploads. Once it finishes, you can preview it and choose Edit, Finish Recording, or Delete.
Edit opens the recording in the editor so you can keep working on it.
Important: your recording isn't saved until you click Edit or Finish Recording. If you close the window before then, the recording is lost.
Add scenes to your recording
A recording can be made up of several scenes, which is useful if you want to record in takes rather than in one go.
Add one — before finishing, click New Scene.
Delete one — delete scenes individually, or click the ••• menu above the scenes to delete them all.
Rearrange them — click Edit to open the recording in the editor, where each scene appears as a separate clip you can move and trim.
Record your computer's audio
Browsers don't record system audio by default, but there's a way around it on both operating systems:
Windows — tick Share system audio in the screen-sharing window before you start recording.
macOS — system audio can only be shared when you record a specific browser tab. The option appears during the screen-sharing selection.
Camera and microphone permissions
If your camera or microphone isn't showing up, work through these in order.
If your external device isn't detected
Any device your browser recognises will work in VEED, including built-in laptop and desktop webcams, which need no setup. For external cameras and microphones, try the following:
Reconnect the device.
Do a hard refresh — CTRL + F5 on Windows, CMD + Shift + R on Mac.
Clear your browser cache and cookies, then try incognito mode.
Temporarily disable any VPN, firewall, adblocker, or antivirus software, as these can block device access.
Chrome and Edge
Click the lock icon next to the URL.
Set Camera and Microphone to "Allow" in the site information panel.
Refresh the page.
Firefox
Firefox asks for permissions when you open the recorder — allow access to your camera, microphone, and screen. If it still doesn't work:
Click the lock icon next to the URL.
Click the arrow next to "Connection secure", then More Information.
Open the Permissions tab, untick Use Default for camera and microphone, and set both to Allow.
Close the window and refresh the page.
Frequently asked questions
How long can I record for?
Up to 60 minutes, on every plan.
What's the difference between the two ways of opening the recorder?
Use More apps → Record on your dashboard to start a brand-new project from a recording. Use the Record button in the editor's top bar to add a recording to a project you've already started. The recorder itself works the same either way.
Why can't I share my system audio?
Browsers only allow system audio to be shared for certain sharing options. If the option isn't there for the tab, window, or full screen you picked, go back and choose a different one — on macOS in particular, system audio is only available when sharing a single browser tab.
My external camera doesn't appear in VEED. What should I do?
Reconnect it, do a hard refresh, clear your cache and cookies, and disable any VPN or antivirus software that might be blocking it. Full steps are in camera and microphone permissions above.
Do I need to download anything to record?
No. The recorder runs entirely in your browser.
I closed the tab and lost my recording. Can I get it back?
Unfortunately not. Recordings are only saved once you click Edit or Finish Recording, so make sure you do one of those before closing the window.
