Chroma Key and Remove Background

Updated this week

Our tools let you remove the background from your videos using two tools:

  • Auto Background Remover (AI-powered)

  • Green Screen / Chroma Key (for color-based background removal)

This is useful for placing yourself in a new scene, replacing plain backdrops, or creating cleaner edits for content creation. Here is a tutorial on how to use the features.

Who Can Use This Feature?

  • Free Plan: Access only to Green Screen(Chroma Key)

  • Paid Plans: Full access to Background Remover and Green Screen(Chroma Key)

Step-by-step: How to remove backgrounds

Open the editor and create a project

  • Go to veed.io

  • Create an account or log in

  • Click Create Project

  • Upload your video by dragging it to the canvas or selecting from your device

Auto Background Remover

This feature uses AI to detect and remove backgrounds behind people in a video.

Tip: Works best with HD video where the subject is clearly visible and well-lit.

How to use it:

  1. Select your video clip on the canvas or timeline

  2. Scroll down and click Remove Background

  3. Wait for the background to be removed (processing time depends on video length)

  4. After the process finishes, the background will be replaced by the project’s default color

To customize your background:

  • Go to the Settings tab to change the background color or upload an image as a background

  • You can go into the Image tab and upload an image as a background there, too. After uploading, use Ctrl + Up/Down Arrow (Cmd on Mac) to move the image to the lowest layer.

Green Screen (Chroma Key)

Use this to make a solid color background transparent and replace it with something else.

Ideal for videos shot against a green (or any solid) screen.

How to use it:

  1. Select your video clip on the canvas or timeline

  2. Scroll to the Chroma Key section and toggle it ON

  3. Use the color picker to select the background color on your video

  4. Adjust the sensitivity slider (1–100) to fine-tune what gets removed

Once transparent:

  • Go to the Settings tab to change the background color or upload an image as a background

  • You can go into the Image tab and upload an image as a background there, too. After uploading, use Ctrl + Up/Down Arrow (Cmd on Mac) to move the image to the lowest layer.

Note: Exported videos will have a colored background if no background is added manually — they won’t be transparent.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use high-resolution video for more accurate removal

  • Ensure the subject contrasts well with the background

  • For Green Screen: use consistent lighting and uniform color, avoid shades

FAQ

  • Q: Can I remove the background from images?

    • No, this tool only works with video files.

  • Q. Can I export with a transparent background?

    • Not yet. You must add a new background or export with a colored one.

  • Q: What’s the best use case for Chroma Key?

    • Replacing solid color backgrounds in talking head videos, product demos, or tutorials.

  • Q: Why isn’t the background fully removed?

    • Try increasing the sensitivity slider. If the background color varies too much, removal accuracy may drop.
