What is AI Background Expand?
AI Background Expand is a generative AI video tool available in the Editor → Video Properties → Magic Tools panel. It expands the visible background of a video when changing its aspect ratio between 9:16 and 16:9.
Common use cases
Converting portrait videos to landscape
Resizing landscape videos to portrait
Expanding square or cropped videos to either landscape or portrait
When you click AI Background Expand, you’ll see a preview of the final aspect ratio output before generation begins.
How it works
Select your video clip on the editor canvas.
Open the Video Properties panel.
Under Magic Tools, click AI Background Expand.
Review the target aspect ratio displayed.
Click Confirm to start AI Background Expand.
A progress bar will appear while the AI expands the video background. The canvas and timeline will update to show the expansion.
Once complete, your clip will be replaced with the expanded video.
You can undo or toggle on/off AI Expand for that video at any time.

AI Background Expand uses generative AI to recreate and extend the visible background of your video. Processing time may vary based on video length.
The process runs in the background, and you can monitor progress in the status bar.
The video clip must be at least 3 seconds long to use this feature.
Expanded videos retain your original content and proportions — no cropping or distortion applied.
